Intake & Personalized Plan

Your child's first appointment isn't a tutoring session. It's an assessment. We get to know how your child learns — not just what they're missing. Then we build a plan specifically for them. Not a curriculum kit. Not a worksheet packet. An actual plan.

Step 3 — Join a Group or 1:1 Session — for the Year

Your child joins a small group (2–6 students) or a 1:1 session and stays for the school year commitment. Sessions run Monday through Thursday after school at our location on Hunter Lane in Crandall, TX — directly across from Crandall High School.

WHY COMMIT TO A SCHOOL YEAR OF TUTORING INTERVENTION

Q: Why does tutoring at Small Town Scholars require a year-long commitment?

A: Lasting academic growth requires consistent, repeated practice over time. A full school year gives students the time they need to build real skills, develop study habits, and close learning gaps that have often accumulated over months or years.

Research on spaced repetition and memory consolidation confirms that short-term tutoring can help with immediate tasks but rarely produces the kind of improvement that transfers to the next grade level and beyond.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT AT TUTORING?

There's science behind why your child zones out in a traditional classroom — and science behind why our sessions hold their attention long enough to get the real work done.

Learning here is not always play. It is structured, it is challenging, and some sessions will feel like a grind — especially for a student who is behind. That's not something we hide from. Closing a gap requires real effort, and we don't shortchange that.

What we do differently is how we sustain that effort.

When students sit still for extended periods, the brain spends energy managing stillness — energy that should be going toward learning. Movement changes that. We integrate physical activity into instruction not as a break from the work, but as a method of doing it. Research consistently shows that movement increases the neural connections that help new information stick, reduces cognitive fatigue, and helps students stay present longer.

We also build concepts through multiple pathways — visual, auditory, and kinesthetic — because the more ways a student can access an idea, the harder it is to forget. A student who has written it, said it, drawn it, and moved through it has a fundamentally different relationship with that content than a student who read it once and took notes.

Is it more engaging than a traditional classroom? Yes. Does that mean it's easy? It does not. The movement and interaction are how we get students through the hard parts — not how we skip them.

We work with students who are behind in math or reading

This is our core work. A student who is behind isn't just behind — they are carrying last year's unfinished content into this year's new material at the same time. That is an exhausting place to be, and it requires more than occasional help. Our group sessions are built specifically for students who need structured, sustained support to close a real gap.

We work with students with learning differences

Students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism spectrum differences, or English language needs often require a different environment than a small group provides. We will tell you honestly after the intake assessment whether a group setting is the right fit for your child — or whether 1:1 sessions are more likely to help them make progress.

We do not place a student in a group because it is easier for scheduling. If a small group is not the right fit, we will say so and explain what we think would work better.

We have direct experience with students with ADHD, autism spectrum differences, dysgraphia, IEP and 504 accommodations, and English language learners. If your child has a diagnosis or an active plan, bring it to the intake. We want to know.

We work with students who want to go further

Not every student we work with is struggling. Some are passing — and could be getting A's. Some are getting A's and want to go further. If your child is capable of more than they are currently doing and you want to accelerate that progress, we work with those students too.

We work with student who just want Pop-up review sessions

Sometimes a student needs a focused review before a specific test — not a semester commitment. We offer periodic pop-up group sessions for exam prep. These are distinct from our regular tutoring groups, open on a first-come, first-served basis, and run by a certified instructor.

Pop-up sessions are not a substitute for regular tutoring. They are a supplement — or a starting point for families who aren't sure yet whether they want to commit to a full year.

We work with parents, if homework has become a daily battle

If your child is shutting down, refusing to start, or spending two hours on twenty minutes of work — that is information worth paying attention to. It might be an executive functioning issue. It might be a content gap that is showing up as avoidance because the work feels impossible. The solution is different depending on which one it is.

We offer an intake assessment that helps us figure out what is actually going on. A student who can't get organized or initiated often benefits most from Executive Functioning / Study Hall support. A student who starts but gets stuck — or who is fine at home but failing at school — usually has a content mastery gap that hasn't been identified yet, or something else going on.

We will assess, tell you what we found, and give you an honest recommendation. Even if that recommendation is that we are not the right fit.

We work with a wide range of students. What they have in common is that the current situation isn't working, and they need something different. That's where we start.
